Robbery, Larceny, Home Invasion & Embezzlement

Theft and Property Crime Attorney

Your Muskegon Michigan Criminal Defense Lawyer

Have you been wrongly accused of a crime dealing in theft?  It happens.

Perhaps you borrowed something from work and forgot to return right away.

Or you made an accounting error at the company you work for and find that you are now a suspect to embezzlement.

Even what appears to be an innocent circumstance could lead to a serious criminal charge – one that could taint your record for life.  You will want an experienced criminal defense attorney, Jeff West, on your side.

Not all the cases we represent are misunderstandings.  Be assured that many are linked to lapses in human judgment.  On the record in Michigan is a theft/property crime case (never affiliated with West & West Law), in which an 18-year-old and two younger friends entered a home that was left unlocked.  There was no damage done to the dwelling; however, the 18-year old young man stole a pair of tennis shoes and was caught.  It was the second theft crime on his record.  One would think that stealing a pair of tennis shoes from a home wouldn’t result in a 2-year jail time felony – but it did.  Using a case example like this, one can see how vital it is to have the best legal representation possible.

Attorney Jeff West, of West & West Law, has substantial courtroom experience to handle all major and minor criminal cases.  If you or someone you know is faced with such serious allegations, you will need a qualified Attorney to aggressively focus on your case and defend your rights.

Misdemeanor and Felony Theft

Michigan Misdemeanor Offenses consist of:

Petty Theft or Larceny of goods or services valued at less than $200

Punishable up to 93 days in jail and a fine not more than $500 or (3x) the value of stolen items.

Petty Theft or Larceny (second degree) of goods or services valued between $200 and $1000.

Punishable up to one year in jail and a fine up to $1000 or (3x) the value of stolen items.

Michigan Felony Offenses consist of:

Felony Theft of goods or services valued between $1000 and $20,000.

Punishable up to 5 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000 or (3x) the value of stolen items.

(Felony theft applies to vehicles, trailers or any motor vehicle part, even if not valued at more than $1000)

Felony Theft (second degree) of goods or services valued at $20,000 or more

Punishable up to 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine or (3x) the value of stolen items.

Prior Theft Convictions Can Lead to Higher Charges

Anyone convicted of a prior theft offense could face a second conviction that carries penalties one degree higher than the charged offense.

Example – if goods or services were stolen valued under $200, but the defendant has a prior conviction, they could very well face penalties at the next level between $200 and $1000.
